Mission:
Stars Around the Well
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: Following ‘Consultation’
Head tilted to one side, Jynx watched the images flowing across the small display screen with a curious expression. Captivated by the animated adventure, by the music which interlaced dialogue she did not really understand. Embracing the escape from the clinical white medical bay which had been a temporary home since the day before.
Catching movement from the corner of her eye she touched the display, pausing the movie as she removed the ear buds which had allowed her to listen without disturbing the staff. Her brown eyes turned blue then pink as she watched the stranger make her way towards her, fairly certain it was towards her since she was the only person around. And as her eyes shifted so did the highlights in her brown hair.
“If you are looking for the doctor he is in his office I think,” she offered, studying the woman. She wore a uniform, so Starfleet … so far everyone ’Starfleet’ had been nice enough. She was sure it helped that she worked somewhere which sold coffee.
“Actually I’m here to see you” Lanna smiled warmly. “I’m Lanna Alexander, ships Counsellor. The Doctor asked me to check in on you, see how you’re settling in. Do you mind if I sit down?” She motioned to a nearby seat.
Jynx glanced towards the doctor's office, noting the door was firmly closed. "Sure," she finally answered. "I'm Jynx. But I guess you know that if you were sent over here..."
Lanna nodded. “It’s nice to meet you Jynx” she pulled up the chair and sat down. “I notice you have the ability to shift the colour of your hair and eyes, that must be useful if you feel like a change?”
Reaching back she swept her long hair forward so she could see for herself. Pink. “It just kind of happens,” she answered with a dismissive shrug. “Kinda strange that most people need to use technology or chemicals to do it. Little ones like it.”
“I can imagine they do” Lanna grinned. “So how are you finding being here? I understand that you only recently came onboard. You won’t be stuck in here forever I’ll organise some quarters for you.”
“I came aboard back at the station. Mr Kline set us up bunks in the back of the shop, we sleep there,” Jynx said with a nonchalant shrug. It was a bed, somewhere safe. What more could they need? “The ship is nice. People have been nice too.”
“I can organise other quarters for you if you’d like?” Lanna offered. “They’d be yours, somewhere to call your own. The decision is yours though, just let me know. Do you remember much about your past?”
“As fun as that would be to watch his vein do that throbbing thing when he gets mad, Mr Kline would not like that and he is the boss.”
“Mr Kline?” Lanna looked at Jynx curiously. “Tell me more about him, and how come he’s your boss.”
“He owns the coffee shop that we run on the ship,” Jynx told her. “He’s like… old? I guess. He does all the management stuff and Bez and I serve the coffee. Six days a week, 0700 ’till 1700. He is the boss. What he says, goes. He is off the ship just now but checks in multiple times a day. He likes to make sure we are open and not destroying the place.”
“It sounds like he’s something of a slave driver.” Lanna offered. “Does he treat you well?”
“I guess,” she shrugged, dismissively. “He just likes things done a particular way. He isn’t so bad. Doesn’t your boss make you work hard and do… whatever it is needs done?”
“The Captain treats us with respect, and we are required to do our jobs, but we’re not forced to do anything.” Lanna answered honestly.
“Then why are they called orders?” The teen challenged, her tone curious rather than malicious.
“Good question” Lanna smiled. “The Captain does give orders, but we’re not treated like we’re slaves. As Starfleet Officer’s we all know what’s expected of us. I love my work, being a Counsellor is what I want.”
"But he could order you to do something you didn't want to do," she pointed out. "Anyway, what does it matter? Nobody needs so much space. A bed is more than enough."
Lanna nodded. "As long as you're happy that's what matters. Any problems please do let me know though okay?"
"Sure," the teenager conceded, in a tone which many of her peers had used through the centuries to placate those older than themselves. There was a long silence before she added, "can I go back to watching the movie?"
Lanna nodded. “Sure, hope you enjoy it” she smiled warmly knowing only too well that Jynx most likely wouldn’t call as she headed on her way.
